My husband bought me a bumper sticker years ago when the children were very little that said "Just remember to breathe". Instead of putting it on my car for others to read I stuck it to my fridge for constant reminding.
It has become my mantra over the years, especially for the sticky moments in life. As soon as I connect to my breath my feet plant firmly back on the ground. Sometimes one breath is all it takes to be present to this moment other times, like when I received the panicked phone call from my family in Christchurch after the big earthquake last year, it takes quite a lot more breathing.
It is equally useful for the joyous times too, cementing the feeling of joy in your body and soul.
Try it out and see how it works for you.
Thank you for this lovely post. It is so easy to get caught up in the raw emotion of life and I notice that when I slow things down with the breath, the day can be so much more bearable.
